Georgetown — The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization awarded $8.8 million for improvements to Williams Drive from D.B. Wood Road to .3 miles west of FM 3405, a total project length of 3.5 miles. The road improvement project is a partnership between the City of Georgetown and Williamson County.
The project includes an expansion to a four-lane road with a two-way left turn lane. A right turn lane will be constructed approaching D.B. Wood Road. The proposed roadway will have 10-foot shoulders throughout. The road will also receive grading, drainage improvements, asphalt paving, signage, signalization and striping.
Williamson County will manage the project and provide full funding up front, but the City of Georgetown will reimburse the county 65 percent of the cost, which will cover the portion of the project within the city limits.
Construction is expected to cost $22 million, including $15.2 million for construction and $7 million for utility relocation.
The Texas Department of Transportation had planned to widen the road, but recently announced they no longer had money to finance construction.
The Williamson County Commissioners Court has approved two contracts for the project. Cobb Fendley Associates will manage the utility relocations, while Kellogg Brown & Root Services, Inc. will take on the engineering of the road. Both companies previously had contracts with TxDOT for this work. Williamson County Unified Road System will handle tree trimming and brush clearing for the utility relocation beginning in June. The county will seek contractor bids in August or September and begin construction in the fall. The project is expected to take 18 to 22 months.
