Owner pursues passion after life-altering experience
After Delores Urquizo was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2000, she realized that she should follow her destiny. The owner of Simply Irresistible, a gift and home décor boutique, emotionally describes that time as a defining moment of her life: she decided she would not die and she would pursue her love of interior decorating.
“[After my surgery,] I realized that I had to pursue my passion,” Urquizo said. “I decided I could no longer work an eight-to-five job, and I would start my own business.”
While working for Electronic Data Systems for 18 years, Urquizo built quite a reputation for home design, helping family and friends design the interior of their homes.
EDS closed their Austin branch about the same time she was recovering. They asked her to stay on to help close the branch and offered her a severance package if she would remain.
With the money from that package, she was able to open her home décor and gift store, first in Austin at Northcross Mall for six months before moving to the Railyard Shopping Center in November, 2004.
“It was kind of a make or break deal moving out here,” she said. “I knew Cedar Park needed a unique home décor and gift shop, but I didn’t know for sure if people would change their routine of shopping in Austin or Georgetown and begin shopping here.”
But she knew when she talked to Railyard owner, David Johnson, she would like that location.
“David looks for unique shops,” Urquizo said, “owned by individuals who care about their business.”
Urquizo loves the community spirit the Center is bringing to Cedar Park.
“This month I am spearheading the Railyard’s spring festival. We held the first one last fall, and it brought in more than 3,000 people.”
Simply Irresistible’s tag line in its advertisements is ‘You will love this place!’ Urquizo says she hears people say that all the time.
“What I hear a lot now,” she said, “is ‘Wow, finally, we have a little bit of Salado or Fredricksburg in Cedar Park.’ I love that.”
The store offers gifts that Urquizo considers to be phenomenonal deals: good quality and fair prices; and with her decorating skills and trendy merchandise, the store has a distinctive personality.
“We have many one-of-a-kind items for the home, and they are being purchased by people who recognize a great value and good quality. We also try to treat each customer as if they are family.”
In January, Kenwood Homes requested that she display some of her home décor in their Cedar Park show homes. In May, the store will be spotlighted by KVUE-TV in a how-to feature on home decorating.
“I can’t believe what a good year we are having,” Urquizo said, “and it’s only April.”
