FM 2243: Part two
Along FM 2243, history meets present-day development within a small distance. While there is plenty of open land in the area, the corridor also includes a large pocket of industrial businesses. This month, we look at the developments that shape this area of Leander.
Transportation
- 1 - The Ronald W. Reagan Boulevard extension between FM 2243 and Hwy. 29 opened Jan. 30. This four-lane divided roadway is 4.1 miles and was funded through the 2000 bond project.
Ronald Reagan is an extension of Parmer Lane, and plans call for it to reach IH 35 north of Georgetown. The segment of Ronald Reagan between Hwy. 29 and FM 3405 opened last fall. The extension between FM 3405 and FM 2338 is scheduled to open this summer. - 2 - The future collector road is a developer-funded project that will be built once the land is developed. The road will connect the existing FM 2243 with the anticipated realignment of FM 2243.
Future land use
- 3 - This 85-acre property has two development plan options, one as a business park and one as an industrial park. Both options include retail space on the frontage of FM 2243. While construction will not begin until the city water/wastewater lines reach the intersection of FM 2243 and Ronald Reagan Boulevard, the developer hopes to begin phased construction of multiple 25,000 to 50,000 sq. ft. of flex-space buildings later this year.
History
- 4 - The Davis Cemetery is the resting place for a group of 30 homesteaders led by John Webster. While en route to a land grant in Burnet on August 27, 1839, the party was attacked by Comanche Indians. Mrs. Webster and her two children were captured by the Comanche band. All others were killed and rest together in one grave.
The cemetery land was originally set aside by the Davis family and has been used for decades by family members of the original settlers and close friends.
