signLa Feria, a Mexican restaurant with brightly colored walls and plenty of seating, opened almost four years ago on Bell Boulevard (US 183) in Cedar Park.

Owner Daniel Estrada was 26 years old when he started his first La Feria restaurant on Austin’s South Lamar Boulevard.

“It’s all I know,” Estrada said. “It was my first job. It was the only thing I knew how to do, so I opened a restaurant.”

La Feria specializes in fajitas, which the Cedar Park location will see more of on its new menu that came out last month. Now on the menu are: Fajita Chipotle, ($9.99; $18.99 for two) beef or chicken fajitas covered with chipotle sauce and Jack cheese, and Fajita Romana, ($10.99; $20 for two) beef or chicken fajitas covered with mushrooms, onions, sun-dried tomatoes and a spicy cream sauce. All fajitas are served with served with frijoles a la charra, Spanish rice, guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream and tortillas.La Feria offers fried ice cream dessert.

Estrada was interested in opening a location in the growing Cedar Park area.

“I wanted one restaurant out of the area where there weren’t as many restaurants,” said Estrada. “It’s not that busy. It’s probably one of the slower stores, but profit-wise it’s pretty good.”

Though the Cedar Park restaurant is doing well, Estrada does not anticipate opening more locations outside of Austin, because he finds it difficult to find employees. However, La Feria may open a new location in Austin within the next year.

For an appetizer, the queso con rajas ($5.99) is a little different from the usual queso. Served bubbly hot, roasted Poblano strips and mushrooms are mixed in the melted Monterrey Jack cheese with warm flour tortillas on the side.

Monday through Friday enjoy the lunch special, which changes daily, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $5.99, which includes iced tea.

The combo fajitas ($9.49; $17.99 for two) come with sizzling hot strips of steak and chicken meat with grilled onions and bell peppers, along with all the fixings on a side plate (frijoles a la charra, Spanish rice, guacamole, pico de gallo and sour cream).

The flavorful carne guisada ($7.49) is made up of spiced beef cooked in a Mexican style sauce and served with guacamole salad, rice, beans and tortillas.

For dessert, the Pastel de Tres Leches ($2.95), a white cake with white icing, sprinkled with nuts, drenched in milk and topped with a cherry is delicious. Or try the fried ice cream, which is a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream covered with a crunchy outside coating ($2.95).

The wait staff was friendly and efficient making it a great restaurant to dine in when its necessary to get in and out quickly for lunch.

Escape from reality during La Feria’s happy hour held all week long from 3 to 7 p.m. Straw hut umbrellas and palm trees transform La Feria’s patio into a tropical vacation, if only for a couple of hours.Map showing location of La Feria
