Taste of New Jersey in the heart of Leander
After reading rave online reviews of Saccone’s Pizza and Subs, we headed to this small eatery located in Leander’s Osage Village for some “pizza with a Jersey attitude.”
Open since 1997, owner Dan Saccone has brought the pizza of his childhood in New Jersey to Leander. The cooks make their own dough and use imported Italian tomatoes to make their sauce. Brick ovens give their thin-crusted pizzas a crisp texture. We glanced through the menu and realized there was a whole lot more to offer than their numerous pizza selections.
We opted out of the Appetizers and Salads section of the menu with some regrets. The antipasto ($9.95) looked great as did the jalapeno poppers ($3.50), mozzarella sticks ($4.25), and mozzarella alla capresse ($9.95) with fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers, fresh tomatoes, and fresh basil. We were glad we saved our appetites. When our orders arrived we realized we were not going to go home hungry.
Our calzone ($5.00) stuffed with ricotta cheese and mozzarella with a freshly flavored sauce was especially well prepared and one of the dishes we fought over until the last bite was consumed. The chicken parmigiana ($9.95), a breaded breast cutlet with cheese, herbs, and seasonings, was served atop a heaping plate of steaming spaghetti--a plate with enough for two to share plus a nice portion for tomorrow’s lunch.
Tapping into the Hot Subs and Dogs section, we ordered the double Italian hot dog ($5.50) with two sabrett hot dogs topped with sautéed green peppers, onions, and french fries all inside a warm, wonderful Italian roll. Another of our choices from this section was the meatball sub ($5.00), which consisted of several large, well-seasoned, lean meatballs in a light sauce, served on a fresh Italian roll with a pickle and a side of chips. The sabrett dogs are purported to be a Jersey favorite and we could see why. They were really tasty.
We all figured pizza was pizza, but this Jersey-style “pie” definitely had a different edge. The thin crust and flavorful sauce with our choice of varied toppings made this standby a hit with our group. Not much of this menu choice made its way into our doggie bag.
Best way to eat jersey-style pizza: fold in half
- All Saccone’s pizza are large size and prices begin at $12.25

- Favorites:
- Mom & Dad’s Special ($13.75), extra thin crust with fresh basil, black pepper, oregano, topped with mozzarella cheese.
- House Special ($19.95) with any six of their toppings ranging from Canadian bacon, roasted red peppers, banana peppers, fresh basil, pineapple, pepperoni, or meatball.
