Jardin Corona diversifies traditional Mexican menu

Sign for Jardin Carona When it comes to Mexican food, Jardin Corona in Cedar Park lays out some of the tastiest fare around. This family-oriented restaurant has a diverse menu, reasonable prices, and a pleasant dining atmosphere.

My daughter, a friend, and I started our evening with a variety of appetizers. The generous serving of guacamole (5.99) was well seasoned with bits of fresh tomato and served on a bed of fresh iceberg lettuce. The tortilla soup (3.99) was a tasty chicken broth base with chunks of chicken, carrots, onions, and corn topped with strips of crispy corn tortillas. Our third choice, the Caldo de Pollo (4.99) was a rustic combination of zucchini, corn, carrots, and onions in a hearty stock.

The restaurant manager, Cesar Barrera, named this dish as one of the customer favorites. It is a chicken breast stuffed with Monterrey Jack cheese, bacon and mushrooms, lightly fried and served over a bed of rice with queso, charro beans and guacamole salad.

Our entrees arrived with delectable aromas of Mexican rice, frijoles, chili peppers, and fresh cilantro. My choice, the Pechuga Encebollada (7.99), was a large grilled chicken breast with sweet smothered onions and melted Monterrey Jack cheese served with generous sides of rice, charro beans, and guacamole.

Our friend had the Chimichanga Jardin (8.99) which was a large flour tortilla filled with tender chicken, savory spices, Monterrey Jack cheese, and fried to just the right crispness. My daughter ordered the traditional Chile Relleno (8.99), a generously stuffed poblano pepper with tender chicken and a blend of cheeses -- lightly breaded and fried. A smooth and mildly spiced sauce topped the dish.

To conclude our meal, we shared some flan as well as the fried ice cream. We all enjoyed the flan, but fought over the fried ice cream with its creamy vanilla ice cream under a light and crunchy topping set in a fried pastry bowl. We gave it three thumbs up!

As we left the restaurant we all agreed that we had enjoyable dishes with more than generous servings, reasonably priced with great diversity in the menu in a pleasant atmosphere. Muy bueno!

The original Jardin Corona Mexican Restaurant opened 13 years ago off Pond Springs Road in Austin. The restaurant owner, Jorge Benitez, brought the restaurant to Cedar Park in 1999 and opened the third location in Leander a few years later.
