Water availability an important issue

The topic of water is one that hits close to home with me. I grew up in a house that didn’t have access to city water, and we relied on a 300 ft. well to generate our supply out of the Glen Rose Aquifer. I vividly recall times throughout my childhood when our well would run dry. This had its obvious downfalls, but it also taught me at a young age the value of this precious resource.

It wasn’t until I moved away to college that I had access to city water. Although the availability of water was no longer something I had to question, I had the importance of conservation engrained in me.

I would minimize the amount of water I used when doing everyday things like washing the dishes and brushing my teeth, turning the faucet on and off and allowing it to run only when I absolutely needed it.

“Why do you worry about it?” my college roommates would ask. “It’s just water.”

While it might not necessarily be something we need to worry about, our water supply is something we all need to think about.

One of our top stories this month focuses on water. The process by which water goes from source to faucet should not be taken for granted. It is important for everyone to know what city officials are doing to ensure an adequate and affordable water supply in the years to come.

To learn a few ways you can help protect our water supply, I encourage you to visit the City of Cedar Park website at www.ci.cedar-park.tx.us to view conservation tips, a preferred plant list, and the 2006 watering schedule.

As you flip through the pages of this month’s issue, you’ll notice we have continued to redesign our feature pages to enhance the paper, making it more reader-friendly.

We also added a new feature, From Our Web Site, to provide our readers with breaking news stories that were posted on our website throughout the month. I encourage you to tap into the best source of local news by visiting our site at www.impactnews.com.
