Cities accomplish live, work and play mission
I visited Winkley’s Trading Post a few weeks ago to photograph manager, Ray Simpson for our business profile page. As soon as I walked through the front entrance, I was immediately taken back to my childhood. The sights and smells were almost exactly the same as they were when my dad and I would go to Winkley’s to buy minnows before heading out to our favorite “honey hole” to fish.
For a brief moment, it felt like time had stood still, and Cedar Park was the same quiet little town it was 20 years ago.
But, time has certainly not stood still in this city. Between 1990 and 2005, the population of Cedar Park grew from 5,161 residents to 42,618 – a 726 percent increase. During this same time period, the number of households grew from 3,191 to almost 14,000.
These statistics are a testament to the fact that Cedar Park has accomplished the first part of its threefold mission to be a destination in which citizens can live, work and play.
Providing a place to work, on the other hand, has been a challenge. The explosion in residential growth has landlocked the city and made it imperative for city officials to earmark the limited amount of undeveloped land for commercial use. Developments like the 1890 Ranch are a significant step in this direction.
With school back in session and summer winding down, people are looking for more than lounging-by-the-pool entertainment.
Our entertainment guide provides readers with a variety of leisure activities. We have included not only existing establishments, but also those that are coming soon. Places like the Depot, the Texas X Park and the Cinemark Theater at 1890 Ranch are exciting developments that will make a significant impact on the entertainment scene in this area.
We have continued our Education Focus from last month. This will be a regular feature you can look forward to seeing every month.
As always, we welcome input from our readers. Whether you have a story idea or know somebody who deserves recognition on our Community Icon page, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.
