Supper club offers jazz as a side dish to fine dining.

Nestled in the Gateway shopping center off US 183 is a place for both the discerning diner and the jazz aficionado. Reed’s Jazz and Supper Club offers fresh seafood, prime steaks and live jazz amidst an elegant atmosphere of white tablecloths, black furnishings and red curtains. On the lower level, tall tables and chairs invite you to drink and dine in an intimate forum with other patrons and the jazz musicians. Up the winding staircase is the formal dining area where you can enjoy time with family and friends.

The Marc Devine Quartet shake up a Tuesday night at Reed’s.

Originally the north location of Mezzaluna, the birth of Reed’s Supper Club has meant rebirth to the supper club genre. Clemons is a long-time local restauranteur who strives to offer a complete dining entertainment experience. The supper club is a true hit.

For appetizers we chose the Blue Crab Cakes ($8.50). The cakes’ shells were fried perfectly, not infringing on the crab stuffing which was delicious and full of crabmeat. I gave these a high rating.

Our soup choices were the brandy lobster bisque ($8) and the Seafood and Andouille Sausage Gumbo ($7). The Lobster Bisque was smooth and rich, textured perfectly. The Gumbo was hearty with plenty of meat in a rich full Creole sauce.

For our main course I chose the MisoSake Sea Bass ($24) and Vickie tried the Filet Mignon ($23) with Oscar Sauce ($10). Side dishes are served family size and we tried the roasted Sweet Potato Mashers ($6). The sea bass was perfectly broiled and topped with a flavorful blend of ginger and shiitake consommé. The crispy noodle topping completed this interesting item. The steak was cooked to order, the meat was tender and the Oscar Sauce was a delightful blend of hollandaise sauce loaded with crabmeat. The sweet potatoes were perfectly prepared.

For dessert, I ordered the Liquid Center Chocolate Cake ($6) and Vickie the Turtle Cheesecake ($6). The cheesecake, made in-house, was truly amazing. The blend of flavors was a perfect ending to our dining experience.

Reed’s offers happy hour specials. There are special prices on beer, wine and martinis and half-price appetizers all night Monday and from 4:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday-Friday.

I recommend the restaurant’s $20.00 three-course meal. Reed’s is open Monday thru Saturday for dinner and reservations are suggested. A complete menu and other items of interest can be found on their website.

Reed’s has used the same booker that schedules Austin’s premiere jazz club The Elephant Room on Congress, and Reed’s features some of the city’s top acts.
