General Manager’s Note • August 2008

The end of August was always stressful for me as a kid. August meant getting ready for school and getting ready for school meant shopping.

The back-to-school shopping frenzy couldn’t be avoided. Even today, the thought of entering a mall and fighting the weekend crowd makes me squeamish. I prefer local shopping complexes that I can easily walk to and find unique businesses with close parking for extra efficiency.

One complex in Northwest Austin that has had an eventful summer is Anderson Arbor. Like me, you’ve probably been watching and waiting for a new anchor to replace the Albertsons at Anderson Mill Road and US 183, which has been boarded up for two years this month. The good news is that Walgreens bought the property in June and is working with StoneCrest Investments to fill the vacant Albertsons. Walgreens will move into the corner spot.

I have talked with Anderson Arbor business owners, most of whom have been there for years, and found their outlook for Anderson Arbor extraordinarily upbeat. It says a lot for them that they’ve prospered in this complex without a flagship. With new tenants like restaurant Kerbey Lane, dance studio Arthur Murray and sub sandwich shop Jimmy Johns, these businesses should continue to prosper. Find out more about the shops in Anderson Arbor in our Community Corridor on page 17.

Even though shopping can be stressful for some, local complexes in the area like Anderson Arbor, Galleria Oaks and Plaza 183 offer a wide variety of businesses in proximity. Keeping gas conservation in mind, now’s the time to shop local.
