General Manager’s Note - October 2007

My adventure with Community Impact Newspaper began almost a year ago.

When publisher John Garrett approached me about launching the Northwest Austin paper last February, I was delighted. Here was an opportunity to service a fast-growing area that has been underserved in terms of local news.

Now as general manager, I look forward to helping local business owners communicate with their neighbors, and relaying timely information about local development, transportation updates and other quality of life issues.

One issue relevant to this area is our story about the change of the city charter to move from an at-large council system to a single member district. This could bring positive benefits to areas like Northwest Austin that have historically been underrepresented.

On another note, we are kicking off the fall season with a holiday guide. I love Halloween and still have memories of trick-or-treating through the neighborhood watching my bag become filled with more candy than a shelf in a candy store. I remember eagerly waiting as my bag was swooped up by my mom in the “screening of the candy” before it could be eaten. I suspected she was pulling out all the chocolate for herself, a fact she confirmed many years later.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, the biggest shopping weekend of the year is approaching. We continue to focus on local shopping in our Community Shopping at Parmer and Amherst Drive.

I am excited and honored to write this note as the new general manager of our Northwest Austin paper. The best training for this position has been driving the streets, watching new developments pop up and visiting with local business owners. I am dedicated to maintaining the integrity of our mission and look forward to hearing from you.
