Transportation changes

CAMPO will host four community meetings to hear the public’s thoughts on requested amendments to its long-range plan and Transportation Improvement Program. The specific amendments can be viewed online at www.campotexas.org. The public comment period will be open from Aug. 14 - Sept. 14. The closest meeting to the Northwest Austin area will be Aug. 30 in Round Rock at the Allen R. Baca Center, 301 West Bagdad Road, from 4 to 9 p.m.

1. Local business advice

Jollyville Java will host the first gathering of the Jollyville Business League Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. at 8650 Spicewood Springs Road, Ste. 105. The first session will feature discussion on the topic “How to help local business owners and promote business.” For more information, call 336-JAVA.

2. Sandwich shop reopens

The Quizno’s sandwich restaurant in the H-E-B shopping center at 6001 W. Parmer Lane, Ste. 240, which closed in October, reopened Aug. 14 under new management. In the months following the store’s reopening, Quizno’s will be offering mailed coupons and special offers. For more information, call 250-3600.

3. New Arbor Walk tenants

Houston-based Spec’s Liquors will open its third Austin location at the end of September in the Arbor Walk shopping center at 10515 N. MoPac. The store offers discounted wine, spirits, fine foods and cigars. For more information, call 366-8300 or visit www.specsonline.com.

Tino’s Greek Café plans to open its newest location in the Arbor Walk by the middle of September. For more information, call Tino’s Balcones Drive location at 533-9292.

Specialty dessert shop Just Desserts by Ultimate Cheesecake is moving from the south Austin location it has called home for 14 years to the Arbor Walk, opening in late August or early September. The store offers retail and wholesale cheesecake, and customers can dine in or take out. Beyond cheesecake, the store also offers Italian sodas, cappuccino, cannoli and party and gift trays. 4. Local accountant

5. Williams-Sonoma expands

Williams-Sonoma at the Arboretum Market, 5722 Great Hills Trail, Ste. 150, has temporarily moved two doors down while its original location is remodeled. Changes will be completed around the end of October and will nearly double the size of the store. The expansion will occupy the spaces once used by Luxe Apothetique and Wildflower Salon. Community safety training 1

The Pflugerville Fire Department, Emergency Services District #2, has built an educational safety house to be used to teach fire safety. The Safety House premiered at the Wells Branch National Night Out event Aug. 7, and will be used to teach area schools, communities and retirement homes fire safety. The unit cost $68,000 to build and equip. Wells Branch Municipal Utility District agreed to fund $40,000, Graham Central Station raised $5,000 and Wal-Mart contributed $1,000. 6. Subdivision breaks ground

Mercedes Homes began construction in July on the Enchanted Forest subdivision, a 56-home development on 14.5 acres on Dorsett Road, off Duval Road. The homes will back up to a small tributary of Walnut Creek, and developers expect the initial construction will take about five months, with build out of the homes coming nine to 15 months later. 7. Shopping for charity

Shoppers can purchase a PlayBingo card for $25 Aug. 25 at the Domain for a chance to win prizes, and to support the Center for Child Protection. The Center works to reduce the trauma for children during the investigation and prosecution of child abuse cases. The PlayBingo Shopping Extravaganza runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Domain, 11400 Burnet Rd, and prizes include a $1,500 Simon gift card. 8. Teen reading at Spicewood

The Spicewood Springs library will host Austin’s teen book club discussion group Sept. 11 from 7 to 8 p.m. at 8637 Spicewood Springs Road. The book for discussion will be The Boyfriend List by E. Lockhart. The discussion is recommended for teens ages 12 to 17. For more information, call 974-3800.
