1. Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Edible Arrangements is joining the fight by donating a portion of its sales to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. When customers order the Awareness Celebration Arrangement or the Breast Cancer Awareness bouquet, 10 percent of the proceeds go to fight cancer. 2. The Villagio in Austin

The Marcel Group is planning an $85 million project at RM 620 and Anderson Mill Road. The Villagio in Austin will be a mixed-use development featuring 117,000 sq. ft. of upscale retail, 32,000 sq. ft. of office space and 288 luxury apartments. Construction is expected to begin in late spring 2008 with retailers opening to the public by Christmas 2008.

3. Christmas open house

Country Keepers’ sixth annual Christmas open house will be Nov. 4 from 1 – 6 p.m. at 9308 Anderson Mill Road, Ste. 500. The open house features primitive and period-inspired reproduction furnishings and handcrafted holiday accessories. Everything from Windsor chairs, hand-woven textiles, pottery, and painted Shaker-style furnishings to vintage Christmas ornaments and hard-to-find holiday decorations will be on sale. Golf tournament fund-raiser

The Connally High School softball team will host its third annual golf tournament at the Shadowglen Golf Course in Manor on Nov. 10, starting at 8 a.m. Eighteen holes of golf will be followed by lunch, door prizes and a silent auction. “Closest to hole” and “longest drive” winners each win a free vacation and a hole-in-one wins a truck. The proceeds go toward purchasing a new scoreboard and field improvements. To participate, contact Shawna Lawless at 796-9312.

4. Teen book discussion

The Spicewood Springs branch of the Austin Public Library, located at 8637 Spicewood Springs Road, is hosting a discussion of the book Born to Rock by Gordon Korman. Recommended for ages 12-17, the group meets Nov. 13 from 7 – 8 p.m. Snacks are provided.

5. Election day

Nov. 6 is voting day for registered voters. Early voting started Oct. 22 at Randalls, 10900 Research Blvd., and ends Nov. 2. There are many voting locations in Northwest Austin as well as several mobile voting sites. For a complete list of locations, visit www.traviscountytax.org.

6. Northcastle is going down

The Northcastle Apartments at 8100 N MoPac in North Austin are in danger of being torn down in favor of urban-style luxury apartments. An Oct. 16 meeting of the City of Austin Planning and Zoning was cancelled, but another public hearing is scheduled for Nov. 20.

7. Buy or sell furniture

Home Consignment Center will start accepting consignments on Nov. 1 and plans to open to the public in the middle of November. The new store in the Arborwalk specializes in the consignment and sale of furniture, accessories and jewelry from private homes, builder models and furniture showrooms. 8. New luxury apartments

Nearly 300 luxury apartments and a parking garage are expected to be constructed on Stonelake Boulevard near the Arboretum. Crescent Resources is under contract to purchase a 7-acre tract of land to build the Stonelake site. The four-story apartment building is expected to range from $800 to $1,600 a month for one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.

9. The Domain is growing

Two restaurants in The Domain have opened their doors for business. North opened Oct. 8, and offers a contemporary take on simple Italian dishes. Joe DiMaggio’s Italian Chophouse, which opened officially for lunch and dinner on Oct. 15, serves both classic and exotic Italian dishes.

10. More buildings at AmberOaks

AmberOaks is growing again with the addition of two new office buildings to the existing structures at 9501 Amberglen Blvd. near Parmer Lane and RM 620. The two buildings are the ninth and tenth in the complex and add more than 150,000 sq. ft. For more information, contact Brandon Lester at 314-3576.

11. Walk to school day

Kathy Caraway Elementary School celebrated International Walk to School Day on Oct. 3. About 220 children, nearly 40 percent of the student population, walked, rode their bike or scootered to the school at 11104 Oakview Drive.

Find your heart in the art

An art show and auction is being held Nov. 1 at the Design Center of Austin to benefit the Austin chapter of the American Heart Association. Find Your Heart in the Art will auction off 74 heart pieces done by local-area artists. The event will also feature live entertainment, beverages, hors d’oeuvres and heart health educational displays. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door and can be purchased by contacting Pat Byrum at 433-4056 or pat.byrum@heart.org.

Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month

October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month in Williamson County. The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter is offering a $25 discount on all pets, dropping the adoption fee to $60. The fee covers basic vaccines, spaying, neutering, heartworm screening and a microchip. Many types of mixed-breeds and pure breeds are available.
