1. Viva Chocolato! opens in Domain

Viva Chocolato!, a dessert café, wine bar and chocolate shop, held its grand opening Dec. 1 at 3401 Esperanza Crossing, Ste. 104 at The Domain. Founded by local Austinites Mark Adams and Nino De Flacis, Viva Chocolato! sells chocolate desserts, European truffles, wines, champagnes, ports, gelato, sundaes and more. 2. A sweet anniversary

Ann’s Kitchen Cakes is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Ann is proud to have served generations of Austinites with her cakes and cookies for all occasions. Ann’s Kitchen Cakes is located at 8650 Spicewood Springs Road, 335-4545.

3. Pre-school book reading

Téo Gelato and Espresso, located at 500 W. Canyon Ridge in the Tech Ridge Shopping Center beside the H-E-B, will host pre-school book readings every Monday from 10 - 10:30 a.m. beginning Dec. 17. Attendees will receive a 10 percent discount off every purchase. Téo specializes in gelato, espresso, paninis and breakfast tacos. It also has free Wi-Fi and a drive-through window. 4. Scofield grows

A new addition to the series of Scofield subdivisions is under construction along Parmer Lane. The Scofield Villas will offer six different condominium floorplans with French names at 1310 W. Parmer Lane. The homes are being built by D.R.Horton and the company will begin showing models in January. For more information, call the sales office at 339-2074.

5. Crafty business

Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts store in the Arbor Walk is offering a wide variety of craft classes for children over the winter holiday. From Dec. 26 - Jan. 5, Jo-Ann's will offer 19 classes ranging from sewing classes for children where kids learn to make pillowcases, to craft classes where they learn to make a memory box. 6. Best books of the year

The Spicewood Springs Branch Book Club meets the third Tuesday of each month from 1:30 - 3 p.m. at Austin Public Library Spicewood Springs Branch, 8637 Spicewood Springs Road. This month, the book club’s Dec. 18 meeting will be discussing the best books of 2007. For more information, contact 974-3800.

7. More luxury housing

A high-end, luxury apartment complex is being built north of Wells Branch Parkway at IH 35. Tentatively titled Verde Oak Park, the complex will include 336 one-, two- and three-bedroom units. Rent is expected to range from $864 to $1,440. Verde Apartment Communities plans to start leasing in March, with first move-in dates scattered throughout May and June.

New Year celebrations

8. Main Event

Main Event, 13301 N. US 183, will have New Year’s Eve packages on sale through Dec. 30 that include bowling, billiards, laser tag, glow golf, rock climbing, XD motion theater, a buffet, soft drinks, prizes and party favors. The prime-time package, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m., is $25 for children 13 years old and over, and $20 per person for children under 13. A countdown package lasts from 9 p.m. – 1 a.m. and costs $35 per person for children 13 years old and over and $25 per person for children under 13. 9. North by Northwest

North by Northwest Restaurant and Brewery will have music by jazz trio The Liz Morphis Band and a specially set four-course menu. For reservations, call 467-6469.

10. Claudia’s Hair Salon opens

Claudia’s Hair Salon is now open for business at the corner of Parmer Lane and Lamplight Village, 2006 W. Parmer Lane, Ste. B. For more information, call 873-7148.

11. Applied Management degree available

National American University, a fully accredited, four-year university granting degrees on the bachelor’s, associate’s and master’s levels, will offer its Applied Management degree at its newly established Austin campus.  The Applied Management bachelor’s and associate’s degrees allow students who received on-the-job training or occupational training at military service schools, technical institutes or community colleges to apply the hours of credit earned towards a bachelor’s degree from NAU, located at 13801 N. 12. The Domain offers holiday entertainment

The Domain will offer holiday events throughout the holiday season. Story time with Santa will be held in Century Oaks Park near the fireplace in The Domain Fridays 4 – 7 p.m., Saturdays noon – 7 p.m., and Sundays noon – 6 p.m. until Christmas.

Complimentary horse-drawn carriage rides will be offered on Dec. 14 – 16, 20 – 24 and 26 – 31 from 5:30 – 9:30 p.m. A firework display will run every Saturday night at 8 p.m. throughout the holiday season.

Music groups will hold special performances from the stage in Century Oaks Park. On Dec. 14 there will be performances by Austin City Academy from 3 – 4 p.m., Oak Hill Elementary from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m., and Millwood Baptist Church from 7 – 9 p.m. On Dec. 15 there will be performances by Lamar Middle School from noon – 1 p.m. and Round Rock Christian Academy 2 – 3 p.m. On Dec. 15, there will be performances by First Baptist Church from 3 – 4 p.m. and Promiseland Church from 5 – 6 p.m. On Dec. 17, Hill Country Middle School will perform from 1 – 2 p.m. On Dec. 18, performances include Hyde Park Baptist School at 2:30 p.m. and West Ridge Middle School Orchestra from 5 – 6 p.m. The last performance will be Dec. 19 by Hyde Park Baptist School from 2 – 3:30 p.m.
