Tim Pfluger remembers his grandmother, Alma Pfluger, always working in her garden. His memories of this and his contentment in the garden led to a career.

“It’s the solitude of gardening that I like,” Tim said. “It’s restful and relaxing for me and then there is being with the squirrels and the rabbits and lizards.”

He developed her love of gardening, earned his degree in horticulture from Stephen F. Austin State University and in 1975 opened Green ’n Growing nursery. The nursery is on land that not only he farmed, but his father, grandfather and great grandfather before him, as well.Photo of Rhonda Pfluger, Kim Dixon, Michelle & Tim Pfluger

“This was just a bare field, not a tree on the property, when we decided to open the nursery,” Tim said. “We’ve been here since before Pflugerville was really here when we were just a landscaping business.”

If the store at Green’n Growing looks old it’s because it is. When Pfluger opened his business he had the parlor in his great grandfather’s house moved to serve as the store. The parlor is still the store and the greenhouse is made from the wood of the two barns that originally were on the Pfluger farm.

Green ‘n Growing’s longevity in Pflugerville has created many loyal customers.

“We have a lot of great customers,” Tim said. “We have customers who have been coming for 30 years, customers we’ve known since they were kids and customers who knew my daughter when she was up here in a playpen.”

His wife, Rhonda, and daughter, Michelle, are both involved in the business.

Rhonda proudly relates that Michelle was always an avid reader, reading almost anything, many of which were gardening books.

Tim remembers that when Michelle was a child she began gardening and even had sections of her own that she planted, fertilized and harvested.

“Fortunately Michelle has helped us a lot. Between reading [about good gardening] and becoming [an expert gardener], she was able to help customers since she was 12,” Rhonda said. “She’s been able to help us on weekends since she was pretty young, worked part time and now is full time.”
