Kitchen full of inviting aromas and southern hospitality
When I try to think of a way to describe Granny’s Kitchen, I keep flashing back to old black and white movies where the grandmother lives in a small cottage behind a white picket fence. When she greets you at the door, with her hair in a bun and an apron tied around her waist, you are immediately overcome with the aromas wafting from the kitchen.
When longtime restaurateur Peter Harvey and wife Jeanne decided to open their own business, they chose downtown Pflugerville for its small town atmosphere and charm. They not only borrowed many recipes from Jeanne’s grandmother, but also her southern hospitality.
Granny knows that you love to visit her, but it’s really the food that beckons and she is always ready with your favorites. The dish that brings me back is the Chicken Fried Chicken ($7.59), a hand-breaded breast, seasoned, covered with cream gravy and served with a choice of two vegetables, including mashed potatoes, french fries, black eyed peas, green beans, fried okra, salad and a very tasty corn casserole. The menu is on a chalkboard and changes as needed. Granny goes to the market every morning to choose the freshest produce available.
When the fish are biting, try the Fried Catfish Plate ($8.29) with all the trimmings, or the Catfish sandwich with fries or onion rings. ($4.95) Just added to the menu is a light and flavorful Grilled Tilapia served with lemon garlic butter. ($8.39)
Since everyone has his own favorite, Granny makes a special dish every day. I love to visit on Tuesday for the Chicken and Dumplings. On my last trip, we took a young lady who had never had this traditional southern delicacy, and she declared it the ultimate comfort food, especially as the weather starts to get cooler. The broth is perfectly seasoned, with large chunks of chicken, and the dumplings are hand-rolled for a perfect texture.
Granny’s offers delicious homemade pies to complete any meal. Community Impact’s publisher John Garrett never leaves without having a piece of the buttermilk pie, $2.95 a slice. He says it’s the best he’s ever eaten.
Granny’s opens early Saturday mornings to cook a special breakfast for everybody. You can build your own omelette (choose from ham, bacon, cheese, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, jalapenos, and tomato) ($3.69) for two items and ($4.49) for everything. Granny’s special breakfast plate includes two eggs, sausage or bacon and a short stack of delicious pancakes ($5.99). All are served with home fries or buttered grits, toast or biscuits.
