Charlie’s serves up comfort food one family at a time
Charlie’s Steakhouse opened in 1972, but entering the dining room with red vinyl table cloths, low ceiling, and friendly, casual atmosphere it could have been 1942. Charlie’s brings back fond memories of going out to eat after Sunday church or the late Friday night football game.
Charles and Gladys Parker and their son, Charles Jr., have been serving home-style food to Pflugerville residents for more than 33 years. Charles Jr. says he remembers starting work there when he was only 12 years old.
Many of the waitstaff are almost family with more than 20 years of employment under their aprons. Their service is prompt and personal.
The feeling of family carries over to the customers when they are greeted by name as if they are family members as well.
Treldon Bohls has been enjoying Charlie’s enchiladas for over 30 years.
“I started coming here with my parents in the evenings when I was younger and since I’ve retired I’ve been coming here almost three times a week,” Bohls said. “ It’s become a tradition.”
The true test for any old Texas eatery is the chicken fried steak, and diners won’t be disappointed.
Charlie’s serves a hand-breaded, tenderized cutlet covered with delicious cream gravy. Don’t be embarrassed to use your Texas toast to sop up every last drop. ($7.95)
Be sure to try the homemade fruit cobbler of the day that comes with a free scoop of ice cream to top it off. ($2.25) Flavors include cherry, blackberry, peach and apple.
Each night features a special such as the grilled boneless pork chops. The two large pork chops are juicy and flavorful. The special includes green beans and the ultimate comfort
food, macaroni and cheese.
Lunch specials, available weekdays, feature grilled hamburger steak, fried or broiled fish, beef tips, fried chicken and chicken and dumplings, make any day of the week a good day to drop by. Served with fresh vegetables, rolls, cornbread, coffee or iced tea and dessert. The meal is moderately priced for $7.15 - $8.15 tax included.
For Charlie’s regulars the restaurant is what Pflugerville is all about. It’s a place to bring your family, a memory of days gone by, a stop off for food like Mom used to make.
