Distinct ingredients blend for Old World taste
Everything at the Greek Pita House is made fresh according to old family recipes handed down from generations of Greek ancestors. Owner Zakia Benyoucef prepares most of the menu herself and is very strict about the ingredients. She uses a certain olive oil from Italy, kalamata olives from Greece and an imported lemon juice. Some of the menu items such as couscous take three days to prepare, using Old World techniques. The pita bread is made fresh; one type is thick for the Gyros and the other thin for dipping.
Their pita sandwiches are a popular lunchtime choice. ($6.95) I love the Lamb Souvlakis, grilled lamb kebobs finished in a sauce and wrapped in tasty fresh pita bread with lettuce, tomato and onion. Other pita sandwiches include the traditional Gyro (Yee-roh), ground lamb and beef with tomato, onion, and sauce and the Keftades, ground meatballs, with lettuce, tomato and onion.
Mediterranean food is naturally healthy, and the Greek Pita House has a good selection for vegetarians and the health conscious. The Vegetarian Meal includes eggplant, falafel, rice, dolmas and green beans served cold with cilantro. ($8.95) The Baba ghanoush (which is just fun to say) is a delicious eggplant dip. ($2.50) The Spanakopita is spinach and feta cheese layered in phylo dough. ($3.95) Dolmas are seasoned rice wrapped in grape leaves and always a tasty appetizer. ($3.00)
According to Zakia, Pflugerville Mayor Cat Callen’s favorite meal is the Eggplant cooked in tomato sauce with ground beef, served with rice and Greek salad. ($11.95)
One of the most popular side dishes is the Roasted Garlic Potatoes. Zakia cubes and cooks the potatoes, then covers them with rosemary, garlic, olive oil, salt, basil and black pepper. Another layer is added, and then roasted in the oven. Onion is added when the potatoes are almost finished. ($3.95)
The kids love the Grilled Cheese Sandwich or Cheese Pizza. ($3.95) Both are made with fresh pita bread. One recent five-year-old diner proclaimed the Grilled Cheese the best he had ever had.
When families or groups come into the restaurant, Zakia often suggests entrees and sides that she serves family style so everyone can try different items and enjoy a real Greek dining experience.
Don’t forget the baklava ($2.50) for dessert, made with pecan or the traditional pistachio.
