Childhood memories flavor old-fashioned burgers

While picking cotton in West Texas in 1940, Dan Balderas’ father would take the family into town every Saturday. After a week working in the fields, each child would get 25 cents to eat and go to the movies.

One Saturday as he walked downtown, Dan got a whiff of something cooking. As he turned the corner he saw people lined up. When he got to the front of the line he saw one man with a pan of fresh ground beef on one side and hamburger buns on the other.

The man would make a small ball of meat with his hand, throw it on the hot griddle, and press it with the spatula. He then took the bun, brushed it with butter and toasted it. Putting this together, he made the first hamburger Dan had ever tasted.

Through the years, Balderas, Little Red Wagon owner, has not forgotten how to make a really good old-fashioned hamburger.

The Everyday Special is a double meat, double cheese burger served with french fries and a large drink ($4.89), and will remind you how a hamburger should taste.

Breakfast time at the Little Red Wagon is filled with workers grabbing a bite before starting out for the day. The Breakfast Tacos ($1.19 – $1.99) are a popular item with many choices of fillings, but the Migas ($3.99), eggs, scrambled with a traditional ranchero sauce, served with refried beans, potatoes, and tortillas, are my favorite.

The restaurant also features a daily lunch special from 11 a.m. until they run out. Wednesday is the most popular day when they serve Breaded Pork Chops (2) with cilantro cream potatoes, buttered corn and iced tea (5.49). Try to get there early.

The Balderas’ realize the importance of keeping children happy at a restaurant. Connie Balderas, Dan’s wife and co-owner loves to bake cookies, which she includes in each kids meal.

They not only have an extensive children’s menu, there is also a special children’s breakfast menu.

The Jr. Burger and the Hot Dog come with french fries, small soda and a cookie ($3.29).

Editor’s Note: If you like traditional country music, the Wagon may play the best tunes in town.
