Photo of Sara AlemanI have always loved art. As a child, I enjoyed drawing and then in high school I began working with oils. I took classes, entered art shows, and taught art classes at the Victoria Art League. During that time, the league considered different buildings to locate a community art center, finally deciding on a historical building downtown that one of the artists owned and sold to the art league. We spent time renovating the building, and it was so exciting when we held our first art show there. Although I have not visited in a while, I still hear about art league events and classes that are held at the art center in that city of 60,000 people.

When I moved to Round Rock, a larger city, I searched and discovered there was no art league. Now with the newly created Arts and Cultural Council and the online survey to analyze the needs of the community, I look forward to seeing visual and performing arts develop in the community.

Our annual focus on education kicks off in this issue with higher education news. We have some passionate leaders in the community who understand the value of expanding opportunities for local citizens. In July and August, we will again publish helpful information for parents in the Pflugerville and Round Rock school districts, respectively.

Throughout this issue, we have stories of how local residents, whether they are business owners, developers, or concerned citizens, are seeking to find out what is lacking and uncover ways to improve their city. I know an art league must be right around the corner.
