Phofo of Sara AlemanKVUE recently approached us to do a TV segment on Community Impact Newspaper. If you saw it, you may have noticed us around our conference room table, discussing stories and considering how they affect our readers. Without this teamwork, our product would not be very effective. But we’re not the only ones who collaborate to achieve success.

The E3 Alliance focuses on educational goals for the Central Texas region and includes collaboration of Round Rock and Pflugerville educators. The effort is meant to increase the number of qualified people entering the workforce. With growth in the number of academically equipped individuals, I am interested to see if community involvement increases, too.

Pflugerville City Council meetings have been well-attended for public hearings on zoning change considerations that affect the type of development on a few properties. People on all sides of the issues have discussed that early involvement would promote smoother development processes. Last month, the developers of the triangle property between West Pecan Street and Old Pflugerville Road took this approach. They held a charrette — a series of meetings designed to invite residents to participate in the overall vision of Pecan Street. As a result of the process, they created a viable development plan that contained key elements of the community’s input.

Recently, the Round Rock director of communications, Will Hampton, shared with us how the city is interacting with residents to understand their needs. They are surveying citizens, welcoming e-mails and utilizing the internet. In addition to the city website, you can also find the city staff and even the chamber of commerce on a variety of online forums.
