General Manager’s Note — October 2008

My husband and I devote many of our weekends to family-style barbecues because we enjoy spending time with our friends. I think it is human nature to want to connect with other people. Those running for political offices know very well the importance of connecting with voters.
Some offices up for election Nov. 4 represent areas with several cities. There are often issues that span beyond our local communities and affect neighboring cities so the municipalities work together on a solution. This concept — regionalism — can be likened to a corporate environment. Company managers organize departments to work effectively together and generate profits, while employees often compete for promotions or recognition. Some large corporations may compete with one another in one product line and partner in another. The same is true with cities.
Many of our readers are interested in the upcoming election, so over the past few months and in this issue we feature Community Profiles on several local candidates. This issue also has an Election Guide to help you find more information about each candidate on the ballot so you are prepared when you go to vote.
