In the last few issues, we have focused on the quality of the educational institutions in our area. When companies and new neighbors look to locate or grow in our area, there are a variety of factors they consider. Education is just one of these. Another key ingredient is the protection they can expect from local law enforcement agencies.

Both cities and taxpayers wrestle with the desire to have quality protection and law enforcement with the least strain on the budget. Population growth necessitates additional officers and forces an increase in salaries to ensure quality service. Higher healthcare costs and benefits also cause the budgets to be stretched.

Both Round Rock and Pflugerville police departments strive to remain on the cutting edge of providing service to the community. New officers and upgraded technology will help ensure their continued reputation of keeping our communities safe.

Our other lead story deals with the future of our community. One of the key roles of our elected officials is to plan for growth to ensure a rich quality of life even as the cities continue to grow at a rapid pace. Leaders pay close attention to transportation projects and new business opportunities.

Just as early leaders planned for a controlled growth by plotting out the cities in the early days, the officials today strive to provide quality of life by planning cities and transportation growth.

One vital thing that sometimes gets overlooked is the current businesses that are already here and growing. These businesses usually have fewer tax incentives and less celebration of success, yet they have been here for years paying good wages and helping our local economy grow. Part of our newspaper’s mission is to help bring recognition to these types of businesses.
