PISD - District prepares for fall semester

As students prepare for the fall semester by checking off school supply lists, district officials are also preparing by focusing on growth, the individual child and the creation of a citizens bond committee.
According to Randy Reese, asst. superintendent for communications and operations, PISD is adding about 1,000 new students per school year. Because of the consistent growth, two new schools will be opening this fall: Kelly Lane Middle School and Highland Park Elementary.
“We will continue to deal with the growth and continue to move forward with student progress,” Reese said. “We can always do better and refine curriculum to meet the changing demographics.”
Reese said that there is still money from the previous bond election to pay for another elementary school tentatively named Brookfield Glen Elementary that will open Fall 2007 off Dessau Road.
The next bond election will also be Fall 2007, and Reese said that the district hopes to create its first citizens bond committee.
“We have never had a citizens bond committee,” Reese said. “We want to look at the district, establish its needs and what it takes to meet those needs. We want all stakeholders involved in the process.”
Interim Superintendent Charles Dupre says that his focus in planning for the new year is what he calls “one child, one classroom”.
“It is easy to look at [students] as a group, but we want to focus on one child,” Dupre said. “We are also focusing on customer service and how we can better communicate and interact with the individual parent and taxpayer.”
Dupre took over as interim superintendent last month after Dr. Patricia Pickles, superintendent for a year and a half was released from her contract. He began his job as deputy superintendent in February after moving from Fort Bend ISD in Sugarland to Pflugerville.
