Since opening its doors to students two years ago, the Round Rock Higher Education Center has offered students a variety of college course options, including classes from Texas State University at San Marcos and Austin Community College.Photo of The Round Rock Higher Education Center

Enrollment at the RRHEC is up five percent from last year with 1,600 Texas State students and 800 with ACC. This year introduces two new majors, including mass communications-journalism and undergraduate psychology.

Director of the RRHEC Edna Rehbein remembers when she was working with TSU out of portable buildings near Westwood High School, and enrollment increased 13 to 14 percent.

“Here we are growing more deliberately and a lot more carefully,” Rehbein said.

This year, the center is offering more student services and activities to promote student involvement, along with more community-oriented events.

“The city really wanted us out here for a lot of reasons, and one of them was to be a resource to the community, and we really want to do that,” Rehbein said.

In the past, RRHEC has sponsored forums that focused on social media and immigration. This fall, more attention will be turned toward Round Rock Independent School District by offering more tours and opportunities to students.

The largest event with RRISD involved bringing in 800 students and giving them access to future employers, resumé help and interview technique workshops. A similar event for this fall is in the planning stages.
