Gladys Pfluger, born April 30, 1927, still resides in the house her parents built, located directly behind Timmerman Elementary School. Her grandfather, George and his son, Albert platted the town site in 1904. George and his seven brothers were charter members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pflugerville.

Gladys attended Pflugerville School, where Timmerman Elementary School is now. It was the only school in the area at the time, and each classroom housed two grades. Growing up during the Depression and World War II, Gladys recalls relying on ration coupons for food and gas.

Main Street in Pflugerville contained a variety of thriving businesses, including several grocery stores, a meat market, drug stores and auto mechanics.

The main source of entertainment was the Rock Theater on Main Street in Round Rock, featuring four different movies a week including a western on Sundays. Gladys managed to catch two to three movies every week. She paid 25 cents for a ticket and 10 cents for a hamburger at the Clay Pot burger joint across the street after the show.

Gladys married Leon Pfluger in 1948. They rebuilt and lived in Gladys’s original family home. The couple donated the land for Pfluger Park to the town of Pflugerville on Dec. 3, 1974.

The first Pfluger family reunion was July 12, 1934, at the request of Charley Pfluger, the last surviving child of Henry Sr. with 415 members and guests in attendance. July 4, 2005, marked the 71st annual Pfluger family reunion. The event was held at Pfluger Hall, as it has been since 1986 when it was built by the Pluger family to honor Henry Pfluger, Sr. and his descendents.
