1. History Project Awarded Grant
The Friends of Pflugerville Community Library, a non-profit organization, was awarded a $3,000 grant from Humanities Texas to help with the Pflugerville Oral History Project: A Heritage to Remember. The Friends will collaborate with the Heritage House Partners, City of Pflugerville, the Pflugerville Community Library and the Pflugerville Genealogy Society to gather audio and video interviews with residents who have lived in the area the past 50-98 years. 2. New Pita House
The Greek Pita House, a Mediterranean restaurant, opened Jan. 7, at 15803 Windermere Drive, Ste. 204 in the Windermere Center. The pita house serves gyros, falafels and kebobs. Owner Zakia Benyoucef felt Pflugerville needed a good Greek restaurant that made everything from scratch. For more information, visit www.greekpitahouse.com.
Drop by Drop
The City’s Drop by Drop Landscape Program began Feb.1 and will run through June 1. The program is open to customers of the City’s water utilities. The Program was developed to reduce future demands on the water utility and to create low-maintenance landscapes. Applications are available at City Hall, 100 East Main, or at the Rec Center, 400 Immanuel Road. The first 100 residents to pick up an application will receive a free water conservation goody bag. 3. Ice Bats Flying North
The Austin Ice Bats will be moving their home games next season from the Travis County Expo Center to Chaparral Ice Center off N IH 35 while they search for a permanent location. Chaparral Ice plans to improve their locker rooms, seating and concession areas for the move.
4. Caregivers Golf Classic
The Faith in Action Second Annual Caregivers Golf Classic will be March 30 at Star Ranch Golf Course in Hutto off FM 685. Shotgun start will be at 1:30 p.m. The cost is $85 per person and $340 per team for range balls, golf, cart rental and a barbeque dinner. All proceeds will go to Pflugerville Caregivers. 5. New Animal Care Center
Hometown Animal Care Center is opening its second location off FM 685 in May. The animal care center will have two doctors on staff, Dr. Tom Sutton and Dr. David Weaver. It will be a full service veterinarian clinic with unique boarding for cats. For more information, call their Lakeline location at 258-1155.
6. NeighborNet
The Pflugerville Council of Neighborhood Associations, PfCONA, is sponsoring NeighborNet, a photo workshop to teach how to take photographs of Pflugerville. The workshop is limited to the first 30 people who sign up and will be March 4, at the Pflugerville Community Library and the cost is $10. 7. Pflugerville’s First Tea House
Formosa Art Tea House opened Jan.15, in downtown Pflugerville behind El Rincon. Riva Chung opened the tea house and every third weekend hosts art activities, music, poems and recitals. The tea house offers high quality kung fu, herbal, oriental and jet teas. For more information, call 989-8678.
8. Hawk Hustle
The Hendrickson Hawk Hustle 5K Race/1K Fun Run will be March 4 at the Hendrickson High School Stadium at 2509 FM 685. The race begins at 4 p.m and ends with a sunset finish. Participants can come the day of the race between 2:30 and 3:45 p.m. to the stadium to sign up. To register before, call Tracy Rawls at 990-9406.
