1. Sweet treat shops
KaleidoScoops Ice Cream and More opened at 200 E. Pecan St., Ste. 2 in May next to El Rincon and Lone Star Coffee. A national co-op of ice cream shops, Kaleidoscoops offers everything from traditional cones to cakes to “cool dogs,” an ice cream version of a hot dog. For more information, visit kaleidoscoops.com.
2. Independence Day festival
A year after the opening of Lake Pflugerville, the Pflugerville Community Development Corporation and the City of Pflugerville will hold the first Pflugerville Pfirecracker Pfestival July 1. The free event will begin at 3 p.m. and will continue until after a firework show that starts at dark. Other activities include moonwalks, face painting, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, safety demonstrations, Central Texas Model Boat Club races and music from the PISD Independence Band. The parks and recreation department will sponsor a family fun walk on the lake trail at 8 p.m. Local non-profit organizations will sponsor booths to sell water, soft drinks and food items.
A bus shuttle will bring attendees from the Hendrickson High School parking lot beginning at 3 p.m. and will run until after the fireworks. 2. Fishing for fun
The City of Pflugerville Parks and Recreation Department and the Pfriends Pfor Pflugerville’s Pfuture (Pf4) will host the first KidFish Foundation Youth Tournament June 2 at Lake Pflugerville.
KidFish presents information to children about fishing, conservation and respect for other anglers. Each child, ages 6-16, will receive a degree from Fishing College before the tournament begins. Children are asked to bring their own supplies, as additional fishing gear (rod, reel, bait, tackle) is limited. Free event. For more information, call 251-5082.
3. Grant for expanded reading
The Pflugerville Community Library received a $5,000 technology grant from The Texas Book Festival to support the self-paced and instructor-led lifelong learning classroom and a $2,500 book grant to expand the Spanish-language collection. For more information, visit www.texasbookfestival.org.
4. Networking opportunity
The Pflugerville Downtown Association and the Pflugerville Community Development Corporation will host its Annual World Golfing Championship of Pflugerville June 10 at Star Ranch. The networking event draws community merchants, developers, landowners and builders in a fundraising forum. In past years, entry money has gone to the Heritage House and the Fallen Warriors Memorial. 5. Ribbon cutting
ATX Property Management held its ribbon cutting May 31. The business at 203 W. Main, Ste. B. manages property, including both leasing and real estate, for landowners and homeowners. ATX handles more than 300 properties in the Austin area. For more information, call 990-3551.
6. Firefighters needed
The Travis County Emergency Service District No. 2 is accepting applications for firefighter positions until June 29 at the Central Station, 203 E. Pecan St. For more information, visit www.pflugervillefire.com. Within the next month, the ESD also plans to open its new administration building at 201 E. Pecan St.
7. TxDOT reopens Yager Lane bridge
Texas Department of Transportation reopened the Yager Lane Bridge near Pflugerville May 16 after more than a year of construction to increase the bridge from two to six lanes.
The bridge will align on the west side of IH 35 with Yager Lane, and on the east side with Tech Ridge and Canyon Ridge Boulevard. The bridge will also have two turnarounds for north and southbound traffic on the frontage roads. Construction started Feb. 22, 2006 and the demolition of the old Yager Bridge started more than three months later. TxDOT expects the new Tech Ridge/Yager Lane interchange, with the IH 35 frontage roads, to be completed and operational by June.
8. Open again
Bandidos relocated from 106 E. Pecan St., Ste. 100 to 800 W. Pecan St. The Mexican food restaurant reopened in May into the larger space after shutting down for several months. For more information, call 990-8026.
9. Traveling memorial exhibit
The Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall, a traveling three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. will be on exhibit June 1-3 at Cook Walden/Capital Parks 14501 N. IH 35. The faux-granite replica will be at the back of the cemetery where guests can visit it 24 hours a day. Each year, the replica crosses the country honoring soldiers who have served or are still serving. For more information about the free event, call 251-4118.
10. Restaurant in a tavern
Danny’s Barbecue & Catering, although in business for 20 years, recently moved into Knebels Tavern at 109 E. Pecan St., and offers both barbecue and homestyle cooking. For more information, call 252-1023.
