Ground broke for a medical office building in December on Park Valley Drive. 5. Sports shop
Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), a national retail cooperative providing outdoor gear and clothing, announced Jan. 15 that Round Rock will be the second location for the company’s prototype store initiative using green-building concepts. Expected to open this fall, the two-story, 32,700 sq.-ft. store at University Oaks Shopping Center will be built using the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) principles. 6. Sports complex expands
The City of Round Rock broke ground on the Sports Complex Improvement Project Jan. 25, at the site of the new Girls Softball Complex, near the corner of CR 122 and Kiphen Road in Old Settlers Park. Old Settlers Park will receive improvements on 20 fields, as well as construction of five field complexes. The softball field will be finished this fall. Once completed, the park will include amenities such as lit batting cages, large bleacher shade structures, a championship field with terraced bleachers and warming track. Total cost is estimated for $18 million. Project contractors include Chasco Construction and Journeyman Construction. For more information, call 218-5540.

10. Kids, gaming and fun
Game On, 16708 Picadilly Court, Ste. 106, a fitness club for children ages eight to 14, uses video games to make exercising fun, which they call “exergaming.” New fitness equipment like water rowers that simulate rowboats and an everlasting rockwall that acts as a vertical treadmill has been added.
