General Manager’s Note — June 2008

Photo of Karin ShaverWhen I told my suburbanite dad about our cool new office on South Congress Avenue, he seemed concerned and began preaching to me about the importance of safety. After I showed him the redevelopment efforts on South Congress, he said it is not the South Congress he remembers. The transformation is moving even further south now and there are unique advantages, in addition to receiving Community Impact, for residents wanting to be south of Ben White Boulevard.

I grew up in the Austin area and remember driving down MoPac and seeing signs that read “Entering Barton Springs Recharge Zone.” I saw those signs for years and always wondered what they meant. I finally got my answer in this edition and was surprised to learn what amount of our drinking water comes from that protected area.

An advantage of our publication being monthly is that we can take the time to investigate and explain complex issues. We are stretching that advantage slightly this month. Going forward, we will publish on the fourth Friday of the month instead of the second in order to align with our Northwest Austin publication.

Since you won’t receive the July paper until July 25, I want to wish you a Happy Independence Day. Holidays celebrating our country are my favorite and I hope you enjoy a safe celebration.

Thanks to the many of you who took the time to call and e-mail your feedback. The response to our paper has been very positive and we are grateful for your ideas and feedback. Please continue to let us know how we are doing.
