When we announced plans to start a Community Impact Newspaper for Southwest Austin, some local business owners told us that a questioning nature is a defining characteristic of South Austin and Oak Hill. Answering questions is the mission of our newspaper.

When I was in middle school, a good friend of mine would frequently annoy the teachers because he was never satisfied with a glossed-over answer to his questions. “Because I said so” was also never sufficient. In 2005, many years removed from middle school, that same friend, John Garrett, started Community Impact Newspaper in Round Rock and Pflugerville because he still had a lot of questions. A newspaper that covers the greater Austin area just does not cut it when you want to know when your commute is going to improve, what is being built on your corner, or what new businesses are opening in your ZIP code.

The hyper-local content of our paper is a differentiator, but another is our distribution. It is free to everyone and delivered via the US Postal Service. The reason is a pure and simple belief that you deserve it. For this type of local information, you usually cannot google it and you cannot find it in the regional news, but it directly impacts your way of life.

It is our tagline and our mission: local, useful, everyone gets it. Whether you are for or against growth, toll roads or development, you still need to be equipped with knowledge. We look forward to your feedback.
