Neighborhoods across Austin will take part in the 25th Annual National Night Out Tuesday, Oct. 7.

From 6 to 8 p.m., participating residents are asked to turn on their porch lights, get outside and spend the evening with their neighbors, police officers, EMS, fire fighters and other city officials. The evening is designed to allow citizens and law enforcement to meet, with a goal of promoting crime and drug prevention. Events typically include cookouts, block parties, parades and youth activities. In years past, nearly 400 neighborhood parties have been registered with the city.

While the night is traditionally held in August, several cities around Texas have pushed the date back this year in hopes of having cooler weather for the evening outdoors.

You can find an event specific to your neighborhood by visiting the National Night Out website at http://www.nationalnightout.org/nno/
