Following months of negotiations, the City of Austin and the Austin Firefighters Association reached a tentative labor contract agreement last week. The contract must first be reviewed and approved by the Austin Firefighters Association. Then, a proposal will be presented to the Austin City Council for final approval.
The tentative agreement calls for no general wage increase for firefighters over the first year, but raises of 3 to 3.5 percent per year over the following three years.
City benefits include drug testing and unlimited flexibility in hiring. Firefighter benefits include a 3 percent increase in pension contributions from the city, increasing emergency leave for 40-hour firefighters from 3 to 5 days, a 48-hour notice added to investigation rights and broadened provisions for promotional examination appeals.
Assistant City Manager Michael McDonald said he hopes to be able to bring an item before Council at the Dec. 18 meeting, but that date is tentative pending the response time from the Austin Firefighters Association.
